Transitional Housing

Transitional Housing

Transitional Housing is the next step towards independent living. Young people often move from our Crisis Refuges  or Transitional Housing once they’ve started to learn skills to help them reach independence, such as money management, cooking and household cleaning. Project Youth have transitional properties in the Sutherland Shire and St George areas. The majority of these are shared 2-3 bedroom properties with a small number of single units. Young people can stay in Transitional Housing for up to 18 months.

Transitional Housing

Our transitional housing program provides longer term housing and support to young people aged 16-24 years. Young people will receive a NSW Tenancy Agreement and are able to stay in the program for up to 2 years.

Young people will work with their key Housing Support Worker regularly but will be required to have the living skills to be able to live independently. Most of the available homes in this program are shared living houses that have 2-4 bedrooms. Because of this, young people will need to be able to live respectfully in a shared living environment.

To live in Transitional Housing, young people must be on an income of a minimum of $540 per fortnight. When a young person is accepted into the program, they are required to provide proof of income and sign a Residential Tenancy Agreement. Rent is charged at 25% of income, plus utilities and regular weekly contributions towards a bond. Other household requirements such as electricity, internet and food are additional costs that young people need to include in their budget.

We understand that in order to create stability and routine, young people firstly need to establish safe housing. Because of this, young people do not require a day program to be accepted into the program. However, all young people will need to display a capacity and intention to be involved in education, training, or employment in the near future. Support workers will assist young people to create a plan and receive the appropriate support to achieve this.
