Volunteer Board Member
The Role:
We are seeking applications to fill a volunteer Board position with knowledge or skills/experience in the following areas:
- Proven capability to provide strategic and sound corporate governance oversight; &
- Knowledge of investment strategies, fundraising and financial sustainability; &
- A thorough knowledge of the current issues affecting young people who are facing
homelessness; &
- Property investment, real estate, housing AND/OR Social enterprise development
What is expected of Board Directors
- Attend meetings at our Miranda Youth Centre monthly on a Tuesday evening
- Review Board papers and other proposals ahead of each Board meeting
- Provide visionary strategic leadership and exceptional governance
- Contribute to decision making and provide advice in your area/s of expertise
- Work towards achieving Project Youth’s strategic and financial goals
- Participate and represent the Board at sub-committee meetings and events as required
Selection process and checks
Project Youth aim to have a Board that is diverse in terms of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, cultural background and lived experience to reflect the communities Project Youth serves. We encourage people with lived experience and/or first nations people to apply, even if you don’t meet the other criteria.
Applications will be assessed against:
- Relevant knowledge and skills/experience identified above
- Expertise in a profession that would add value to the Board
- Previous experience as a Board Director
- The capacity to devote the necessary time to undertake the responsibilities
A selection panel will shortlist applicants and conduct interviews.

all staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment. As a result, successful applicants will be subject to several pre-volunteer checks; including reference checks, a Police check, and a Working with Children check. Please note criminal history does not
immediately affect employment opportunities.
Applications will be assessed on merit.
Project Youth Background
Project Youth, established over 28 years ago, is a Non-Government, not for profit organisation based in Southern Sydney, providing support and assistance to young people who are homeless or facing disadvantage. Project Youth's vision is to create a future where all young people can thrive regardless of the disadvantage they face. To do this Project Youth provides trauma-informed support for young people aged 12-24 who have complex needs, are at risk, come from disadvantaged backgrounds and may not be able to fulfil their potential without additional support.
Our work is in three main areas:
- Homelessness and Housing: Accommodating young people in crisis and supporting transition into independent living or returning to their family home
- Early Intervention: Intervening early to reduce and stop escalation of issues
- Education, Employment and Training: Providing pathways to employment and education
