Project Educate - Youth Support Worker

The Role

Project Educate is a small alternative education school, run by the Project Youth charity organisation. Project Educate is based in Hurstville for secondary students in years 9 and 10, who are missing from the education system, and are at risk of not gaining their RoSA.


The school operates five days a week. Students access the Stage 5 mainstream curriculum for all subjects in the eight key learning areas of the syllabus, through the NSW Department of Education Sydney Distance Education High School online eLearning.


All students enrolled in the school are engaged through flexible learning, hands-on practical skills, trauma informed support, mentoring and assisted with transition into further education, employment and training.


The youth support worker will be employed to  support  the students to sustain attendance and assist with practical and emotional needs including housing, criminal justice, mental health, liaising with carers and community connections, as well as the daily operations including intake, assessment and outcomes reporting. This role also works closely with the teacher, volunteers who support the school and any student placements.


Project Educate provides a wraparound service based within Project Youth.


All students enrolled in Project Educate have a diagnosis, a confirmed disability such as autism and/or a mental health condition which impairs their engagement in learning and prevents them from attending mainstream school on a regular basis.


This Role is based on 38 hours per week on a 12 month fixed Term Contract. A part time contract can also be considered for this position. 


All Project Youth employees are required to undergo a National Criminal Record Check and a Working with Children Check by the relevant State and Territory Government(s) as a condition of employment.

The Main Responsibilities

The Youth Support Worker will have experience in social work/ youth work, group work, advocacy and  liaising  with the education system. 


This role requires a person centred approach using Trauma Informed Practice.


Essential Experience & Qualifications:

  • Qualification in Youth work, Social Science, Humanities or other relevant disciplines 
  • Current First Aid Certificate 

Essential criteria:

  • Experience in supporting young people with complex trauma and at-risk behaviours 
  • Experience in personalised support planning with young people
  • Experience in managing and supervising  young people and/or volunteers
  • Proven experience coordinating a program or project
  • Experience presenting  data and reporting (internal and external)
  • Experience developing policy and procedures 
  • Ability to assess risk and put risk reduction controls in place
  • Proven experience advocating for young people
  • Knowledge of barriers young people face in mainstream schooling and how to address these barriers effectively
  • Knowledge of services available to assist young people to address barriers
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of learning needs in students
  • Understanding of WHS requirements, incident reporting and de-briefing processes
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and non-verbal)
  • High computer literacy across Email, Internet, WORD, Excel and databases

The Person

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience working with students at risk, with moderate intellectual disabilities, challenging behaviours and students effected by significant trauma
