Youth Mental Health First Aid

Project Youth offers the accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course for individuals aged 18 and over.

This nationally recognized training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to support young people experiencing mental health challenges. Upon completion, attendees become certified YMHFAiders.

At Project Youth we see 85% of young people in our services that have a mental health diagnosis or challenge and this is one way you can support ending youth homelessness.

Every young person deserves to feel seen, supported, and safe — especially when facing mental health challenges.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course gives adults over 18 the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to recognise signs of mental health problems in young people aged 12 to 18, and to respond with care and clarity.

This accredited training is grounded in evidence and delivered by certified instructors. Upon completion, participants become Youth Mental Health First Aiders, recognised by Mental Health First Aid® Australia.

What You’ll Learn

Participants are trained to provide initial support to young people experiencing:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Psychosis
  • Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)

The course also covers how to approach sensitive conversations, reduce stigma, and guide young people toward professional help when needed.
