Our Story

Our Story

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has"

– Margaret Mead

We love this quote – and we think it sums up how Project Youth began. Perhaps we’ve not yet changed the world, but we certainly change lives.

That small group of thoughtful citizens opened up our first shopfront on Beachpark Arcade, Cronulla back in 1992, under the name Eastern Area Service for Youth.

A brief history

EASY had three staff members (we’ll call them the three musketeers) focussing on housing and street based outreach. Right from the start, the three musketeers worked collaboratively, sharing ideas and focusing on creative solutions for young people in need of support. It was summarised succinctly in our first annual report back in 1993, “EASY serves as a highly innovative, proactive and preventative organisation that gives many young people the opportunity to discuss their presenting circumstances and make informed decisions about their future.” Today, we still believe all young people, regardless of the disadvantage they may face, deserve the opportunity to thrive – and that, in a nutshell, is our mission.

The small group of thoughtful citizens multiplied when, in 2002, we amalgamated with Menai District Youth service and opened an office in Menai. That same year, our organisation’s name changed from EASY to ‘Shire Wide Youth Services’ (SWYS) expanding our work into early intervention programs.

In 2008, the main office moved from Cronulla to Kiora Road in Miranda, where we are still based today, and in 2011 we expanded our range of programs to include parenting programs, drop-in and community events.

With our mission close to our hearts, our service grew and grew. Three years later, as we established a stronger presence in the St George region, SWYS became ‘Project Youth’, spanning across both George’s River as well as the Sutherland Shire.

Labour Y, our first social enterprise, was formed in May 2014, to focus on the education and training of young people who face disadvantage, ensuring they have pathways to secure employment opportunities. We work with a range of fantastic corporate and business partners who are making a difference to the lives of young people by hiring them as valuable and fast-learning members of their workforce.

Cafe Y - Project Youth

Did someone say coffee? In June 2014, we opened our second social enterprise, Cafe Y. No – this wasn’t just so that we could have the smell of fresh coffee wafting through the Menai office every day… Café Y provides training for young people in hospitality and cooking. The cafe is open to the public serving coffee, cake, breakfast and lunch – one taste of our bacon, halloumi, poached eggs, and fried mushrooms and you’ll make us your regular brunch spot. 100% of the profits from the café go back into supporting local young people – our food tastes amazing, and feels amazing.

Project Youth went from strength to strength in 2014, when we secured the ‘Going Home Staying Home’ tender. We acquired our first crisis refuge, ‘Penny’s’, a safe home for young people facing homelessness. ‘The Bridge’, our second crisis refuge, came on board 2 years later. From that day forward, Project Youth has provided the majority of youth housing in South Sydney, with 76 beds, including semi-supported, transitional and independent housing.

The Homeless Youth Assistance Program (HYAP) also started under Project Youth in 2016, which focusses on early intervention for people under the age of 16 who face a risk of homelessness.

As of 2022, Project Youth operates across 23 services divided into 3 streams: Housing and Homelessness, Early Intervention, and Education, Employment and Training. We have over 50 employees and 70 volunteers, and we support young people aged 12-25 in the Sutherland Shire, George’s River, and Bayside areas.

In 2022 alone, we supported

2,376

young people through our services.

We might be a slightly larger group of thoughtful, committed citizens, but we're still out to change the world, one young person at a time.
