Bayan's Story

Bayan was born in Iran, and grew up in a region torn apart by war. To seek refuge and build a better life, Bayan and her family fled to Australia when she was 14 years of age.

However, her new home in Sydney was not the sanctuary that Bayan had hoped for. She experienced significant domestic violence, and faced the terrifying prospect of forced marriage. Late one night, Bayan escaped her home.

Can you begin to imagine how Bayan felt that night?

Thankfully, Bayan spoke with NSW and Australian Federal Police (AFP), who referred her to Project Youth for urgent housing. Bayan was accepted and moved into our crisis refuge the following day. She had her own bedroom, her own safe haven, for the first time.

In the following weeks, Bayan had many appointments with the AFP and lawyers regarding her case. Throughout it all, Bayan studied hard, and completed Business Studies at TAFE NSW Full-Time.

Later that year, Project Youth supported Bayan into Transitional Housing, where she lived happily, whilst studying to become a nurse.

Today, Bayan is an Australian Citizen, she has her drivers' licence and has saved up to buy her own car. Bayan is now employed as a Home Care Nurse, and has decided she will further her Nursing Studies at University. Bayan plans to move into Private rental, where she will continue to be supported by Project Youth.
