PEER EDUCATION WORKER

The Role

In line with Project Youth’s strategy the role will ensure all young people can thrive despite the disadvantages they may face. In line with Project Youth’s trauma informed Framework and our values of partnership, respect, innovation, integrity and quality, the role will work in accordance to Project Youth’s Youth Engagement Policy (YEP) and provide peer led community education, from the perspective of someone with lived experience of the issues we work in. The role will build community capacity through training, raising awareness and providing resources related to youth issues, including youth homelessness.


Contract: Until 30th June 2024

Status: Casual

Salary range: SCHADS level 3 + leave loading, + superannuation + salary packaging + additional paid leave

Location: South Eastern Sydney



The Main Responsibilities

The main focus of the role will be to:

  • Conduct peer led interviews and surveys with young people at Project Youth
  • Coordinate, plan and participate in youth and community events – the key events for this role will include Mental Health Month, Youth Week and Youth Homelessness Matters Day
  • Liaise with the Social Media Lead for Project Youth to co-design campaigns and posts throughout the year 
  • Provide education, capacity building and skill development to professionals in the sector and community through training and events
  • Co-design and develop Project Youth’s lived experience framework with the CEO
  • Provide information and resources on a range of issues to schools (through assemblies) the community and other service providers

The Person

Academic Qualifications and Experience

Essential Experience and Skills:

• Have your own lived experience of accessing support service that Project Youth provides including, a lived experience of homelessness challenges 

• Be eligible to work in Australia

• Clear understanding of boundary setting, confidentiality and consent 

• Able to articulate and demonstrate your ability to safely work in a lived experience role

• Demonstrate that you have mechanisms and supports in place for your own recovery

• Have a minimum of 3 years from receiving intensive support from Project Youth

• Able and willing to purposefully use your own story to raise awareness and provide insight to Project Youth campaigns and events

• Able to work effectively, compassionately and in a trauma informed way with young people Project Youth serves; as well as with staff (paid and not paid) and community members with lived experience of the issues Project Youth addresses through our work

• Understanding of mandatory reporting, child protection responses and child safe practice standards

• Ability to work in partnership with a range of stakeholders including Council, schools, Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), Child and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHS), homelessness services, community services and domestic violence services

• Exceptional time management skills 

• Strong problem-solving skills and a solution focussed approach

• Proven ability to work both autonomously and as part of an outcomes focused team

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills

• Commitment to the principles of equity of access, cultural diversity and accountability

• Good computer and literacy skills

• Able to demonstrate forward thinking and using initiative

• Energetic and a genuine passion for the organisations purpose


Desirable experience and skills:

• Experience working in a youth service or with young people facing disadvantages

• NSW Driver’s license
