Cafe Y Industry Lead
The Role

In line with Project Youth’s strategy, the role will ensure all young people can thrive despite the disadvantages they may face. In line with Project Youth’s trauma informed Framework and our values of partnership, respect, innovation, integrity and quality, the role will provide leadership and support to our social enterprise cafe, CafeY.
Project Youth, established over 30 years ago, is a non-Government, not for profit organisation based in South Eastern Sydney, providing support and assistance to young people who are homeless or facing disadvantage.
Project Youth's vision is to create a future where all young people can thrive regardless of the disadvantage they face. To do this Project Youth provides trauma-informed support for young people aged 12-24 who have complex needs, are at risk, come from disadvantaged backgrounds and may not be able to fulfil their potential without additional support.
Our work is in three main areas:
1. Homelessness and Housing: Accommodating young people in crisis and supporting transition into independent living or returning to their family home
2. Early Intervention: Intervening early to reduce and stop escalation of issues
3. Education, Employment and Training: Providing pathways to employment and education
The Industry Lead position will utilise their hospitality experience to lead on the strategy and operations of Project Youth’s social enterprise café, Café Y.
The Lead will be responsible for reviewing the current position of the Café, and implementing new systems and strategies that will enhance, and diversify the existing business leading to an increase in revenue, whilst still providing meaningful employment opportunities for young people facing disadvantage.
The role will also work within the Café providing excellent customer service, kitchen operations and coordinating all café staff roles, ensuring the Café operates to a high professional standard and within all Health and Safety requirements.
The Lead will also support the organisation in creating and maintaining community relationships, advocating for funding and support, and contribute to social media content.
The Main Responsibilities
- Develop and implement café procedures for the daily operation of the business
- Supervise and support the safe preparation and sale of food and beverages in line with Australian Food Standard Codes
- Maintain cleanliness and high hygiene standards of the Café
- Implement and maintain waste management processes
- Regular review of sales, process and systems
- Provide support and training to staff
- Engage, train and supervise young people working at CafeY
The Person

Please address the following Selection Criteria:
Essential
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in hospitality and safe food handling
• Experience in food preparation, meal costing and cooking
• Proven experience in ordering and maintaining stock
• Experience in managing/coordinating a hospitality business
• Demonstrated ability to supervise café staff including trainees
• Proven experience working to targets
• Excellent experience and skills in customer service
• High quality barista skills
• Understanding of issues young people face
• Ability to work with young people with varying support needs
• Proven experience working within a budget and able to balance and bank daily café takings
• Proven understanding of workplace anti-discrimination and WHS requirements
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean and hygienic work environment
• Have up-to-date COVID-19 vaccinations
Desirable
• Current First Aid certificate
• Experience in, or knowledge of social enterprise models
